Portimao, championship race : Mako and Dusseldorp claim another podium finish

Fred Makowiecki and Stef Dusseldorp scored their third podium finish in a row in the fifth round of the FIA GT1 World Championship at the Algarve circuit in Portugal. Fred took a flying start to run 2nd in Turn 1 from 4th on the grid. Thanks to a clever strategy, Stef Dusseldorp exited the pitlane in the lead on fresh rubber after driver change. The Dutchman pushed hard but the two Mercedes SLS were a little bit faster and found a way past the Hexis Racing McLaren. Stef managed to keep the fastest of the BMWs at bay to cross the line in 3rd.

The #2 McLaren MP4-12C GT3 had a moment at the start when Grégoire Demoustier was pushed by another car and couldn’t avoid a slight contact with a Ferrari. Greg had to run sideways to avoid the chaos and fell down to 11th. He overtook one of the Lamborghinis halfway through his stint. Then Alvaro Parente, who was competing on his home soil, passed the Porsche but, as he was closing the gap to the second BMW, he saw the oil pressure alert on the dash board, switched the engine off and retired.

The reigning Team World Champion scored important points in Portimao and aims at defending their title in the world’s most competitive GT championship.
